Roslyn Kosher Meats was founded by Erwin & Glady Jacobson in 1985 and continues to be a family business today. "Eddie" as many friends and customers called him was a holocaust survivor who immigrated from Romania to NY after World War II at the age of 14. His first job was in a local butcher shop plucking feathers from chickens. This turned out to be short-lived when he was drafted to serve his country during the Korean War rising to the rank of sergeant. After serving with great pride, he received an honorable discharge and resumed civilian life. While looking for work and attending college he decided to go back into the Kosher meat business which intrigued him. In the 1950's he continued working in various kosher meat markets in Manhattan. A fast learner, Eddie soon conquered his trade becoming a master butcher. With his new skill set, zeal for hard work and mind for business, he decided it was time to open a shop of his own. Spending the money he had saved from years of hard work, he achieved the American dream and became the owner of a shop on Columbus Ave located on the West Side of Manhattan. This was quite a feat for a person who immigrated as a young teen after suffering the loss of his family in the Holocaust. During his many years in business, Eddie constantly attributed his success to treating his customers the right way. He always emphasized service, quality and trust. These are the virtues that Roslyn Kosher was built upon and are still maintained today.
Although the core hallmarks of Roslyn Kosher Meats had not changed since its inception other facets of the business began to evolve. Two of the Jacobson's daughters, Julie and Emily became involved in the late eighties and were instrumental in meeting the changing trends in the Kosher food industry. They helped devise a business plan to launch a gourmet cooked foods and catering department. The new venture soon became a success mostly attributable to Julie's uncompromising standards and insistence in using only the finest ingredients. Her passion for perfection and countless hours of researching and fine tuning recipes paid off. The same processes are still used today and continue to be a hit with customers generation after generation.
In 2010 after many years of hard work Eddie and Glady decided to ease into a much deserved retirement. Sadly, Eddie and Julie have passed on but their legacies continue. Today, Emily embraces these legacies, armed with the wisdom learned from her family. She continues to operate the store with the help of dedicated staff of many years. They've all adopted the hallmarks of Roslyn Kosher's history and continue to do business without compromise providing the community with the freshest highest quality kosher products available.
